The seven planets of the old cosmology included the Sun (Sol) and the Moon (Luna), which we now don't regard as planets at all. The other five were Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. This old, geocentric view of the cosmos was overturned by the Polish astronomer, Copernicus, in . In it other planets circled the Sun while the Sun circled a stationary Earth at the center. Right: The planetary model, conceived by Tycho around , 40 years after Copernicus's book, was an unconvincing attempt to reintroduce geocentrism in the Copernican planetary system.

Cosmology describes the moons as: Small planets, insofar as one infinite mass of infinite size can be smaller than another. Planets do have orbits, or at least lunar orbits are perceived to happen by mortals. Moons are regarded by various cultures as attendant spirits . The book provides a valid chronology, often to calendar dates, and explains the interaction of planets in physical terms. This is a cosmology based entirely on the supposition that the coherent worldwide mythology is history — rather than creative fiction writing in antiquity.

In short, Ward is attempting by an elaborate presentation-and successfully in this reviewer’s opinion-to show that the astrological tradition of the seven planets had a deep and long-lasting influence on Lewis’s imagination. One of the discussions of a book can be used to show the effect of this approach. University Lowbrow Astronomers Book List Cosmology and Astrophysics Book List by Kristina Nyland and Dave Snyder.
